Kharkiv I. P. Kotlyarevsky’s National Univer-sity of Arts graduates of musicology in the walls of the P. I. Tchaikovsky National Musical Academy of Ukraine.

The objective of this study is relations disclosure of long standing, which exist between the musicology faculties of Kharkiv National Kotlyarevsky University of Arts and the leading music educational institution of the Ukrainian capital – Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine. This topic is revealed on the examples of Kharkiv graduates, which later turned out in Kyiv. Their activities became an ingrained part of the scientific, pedagogical, musical and public life of Kyiv. Since olden times there were close productive connexion between two leading higher educational institutions of Ukraine. For many years conservatory of the capital was headed by a pupil of the Kharkiv composer school, the disciple of S. S. Bogatyryov – Andriy Shtogarenko. Another pupil of the Kharkiv Conservatory is the student of Mikhail Tits, Levko Kolodub, which still remains the leading professor of the composition subject. In this article attention is focused only on one faculty – historical-theoretical. From 1975 to the present day eleven graduates, representatives of Kharkiv musicology school were working (and some still work) at the departments of theory, history of music and composition of Tchaikovsky NMAU. Most of them are both pedagogues and scientists, as well as heads of different directions and units in this educational institution. Somewhat earlier, since the 1950s, postgraduate studies trained the leading teachers of the musical and theoretical disciplines of the Kharkiv University of Arts, which had been working here for many years (for example, Olga Gusarova, Zinaida Uferova), and some of them continue to work. Many graduates of Kharkiv became teachers of the educational institution of the capital. Among them are V³ktor Zolochevs’kyj, Lyudmyla Shevchenko, Mykola Dyachenko, Nad³ya Nekrasova-Yavors’ka, Serg³j Tyshko, Maryna Cherkashina-Gubarenko, Galyna Kukol’ (Tyshko), ²ryna Kokhanyk, Olena Sakalo, Larysa Gnatyuk. Since the end of 2008 year a special scientific publication “Journal of Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine” has been released. During this period the “Journal” rendered 33 articles of 24 authors, which are teachers of the Kharkiv National Kotlyarevsky University of Arts. The number of current scientists of Kotlyarevsky KhNUA graduating from postgraduate studies, doctorate and internship at the Tchaikovsky NMAU proves the close ties of the two educational establishments. Of great importance for the overall successful development of Ukrainian musicology is the constant exchange of experience and achievements of various branches. It is also important to go beyond the national boundaries for a wider scientific space. We can find a unique figure of Semen Semenovich Bogatyrev (1890–1960) at the origins of Kharkiv musicology school. He received a thorough and comprehensive education as a theorist and composer at the Saint Petersburg conservatory. From 1922 S. S. Bogatyrev was the head of the theoretical-composer department of the Kharkiv ñonservatory. In order to increase the level of teaching and to get acquainted with new achievements of musicology, leading Moscow specialists K. Kuznetsov, T. Livanova, L. Mazel, V. Ferman came to the Kharkiv conservatory for giving lectures at the initiative of S. S. Bogatyrev in the 1930s. When S. S. Bogatyryov moved to Moscow, he did not end his association with Ukrainian former students and colleagues. One of his favorite students was Galina Aleksandrovna Tyumenieva, who headed the department of music history created in 1947 at the Kharkiv conservatory. A year earlier Galina Aleksandrovna successfully defended the thesis «Tchaikovsky and “The Mighty Handful”» in Moscow. This determined one of her specialization lines as a scientist and teacher. Galina Aleksandrovna always maintained close personal contacts with Kyiv counterparts, especially with A. Y. Schreier-Tkachenko, who always attracted her to reviewing of the latest research, as well as tutorials on the history of Ukrainian music. At present, contacts between students and teachers of musicology departments take place during scientific conferences, which are held regularly in both our musical establishments. The Council for the Ph.D. defense at Tchaikovsky NMAU successfully presented doctoral dissertations from leading pedagogues of Kharkiv, now professors N. L. Babiy-Ocheretovs’ka, I. S. Drach, and L. V. Shapovalova. They often become opponents in defense of dissertations in Kyiv, and on the contrary, Kyiv colleagues are invited as opponents to Kharkiv. The interchange of thoughts and latest ideas takes place on pages of scientific publications by our musical academies.
